- Argentine ants are the #1 pest call in Bakersfield, peaking June through September.
- Roof rats move indoors in October and November as nights cool.
- Black widows and brown widows are active nearly year-round in garages and block walls.
- Yellowjackets peak August through October.
Bakersfield’s climate is great for pests. Long, hot summers, mild winters, irrigated landscaping, and farmland on every side of town mean Kern County homes deal with a fairly predictable rotation of pests through the year. Here is what we see most, when it shows up, and what actually works.
1. Argentine ants
If you have ants in your kitchen in Bakersfield, they are almost certainly Argentine ants: small, uniform, dark brown, and moving in long organized trails. They form supercolonies with hundreds of queens, which is why spraying the trail does nothing. They peak from late spring through early fall, when heat drives them indoors for water, and surge again after the first fall rain floods their outdoor nests. The fix is baiting and non-repellent treatment that the workers carry back to the colony. See our ant control service.
2. Black widows and brown widows
Both widow species are common in Bakersfield, and brown widows have become more numerous than black widows in many neighborhoods. Look for them in garages, under patio furniture, in block-wall crevices, around water meter boxes, and in kids’ outdoor toys. They are active most of the year here because winters rarely get cold enough to shut them down. Regular web and egg-sac removal plus treatment of harborage areas is the only reliable approach.
3. Roof rats
Roof rats are excellent climbers and get into attics via power lines, fences, and overhanging trees. Activity spikes in October and November as nights cool, and again in spring. Signs are scratching in the ceiling at night, droppings the size of a raisin in the garage or attic, and gnawed citrus on the tree. Trapping plus sealing entry points is the permanent fix; poison alone leaves dead rats in the walls.
4. German cockroaches
German roaches are an indoor, year-round pest tied to kitchens. They arrive in grocery bags, used appliances, and moving boxes, and they spread quickly through apartments and duplexes. Small tan roaches with two dark stripes behind the head, seen near the stove or under the sink, are a sign to call quickly. Foggers make it worse.
5. American cockroaches
Large reddish-brown roaches, sometimes called water bugs, that come up from sewer lines and drains, especially in older parts of Bakersfield, Oildale, and East Bakersfield. Worst in summer heat. Drain treatment and exterior perimeter service keep them out.
6. Earwigs and crickets
Every home with a lawn and drip irrigation gets these, particularly in Rosedale and other newer tracts backing onto fields. They are harmless but show up in bathtubs and along baseboards after irrigation and in late summer. Exterior perimeter treatment handles them; they are included in every general pest plan.
7. Paper wasps and yellowjackets
Paper wasps build umbrella-shaped nests under eaves starting in April. Yellowjackets nest in the ground and in wall voids and become aggressive scavengers from August through October, which is why they mob every barbecue. Early-season eave treatment prevents most paper wasp nests; yellowjacket nests should be professionally removed.
8. Fleas
Fleas are worst from late spring through fall and spike when pets spend more time in shaded yards. Indoor infestations require treating floors and furniture with a growth regulator plus a vet-approved preventive on the pet.

What to do
Most Bakersfield homes do well on a bi-monthly general pest plan, which handles ants, spiders, roaches, earwigs, and crickets with exterior treatment and web removal. Rodents, bed bugs, and wasp nests are handled as specific services. If you are not sure what you are dealing with, take a photo and text or call us; identification is free.
